Riverview Park is a welcoming & inclusive residence and we celebrate many holidays from around the world. Today is Lunar New Year, which represents the first moon of the #lunar calendar and is celebrated in many countries including China, Korea, Vietnam & Japan. Every year is represented by an animal, the legend says that many years ago the Jade Emperor asked for all the animals to visit him on the first day of the new year. 12 animals made the long journey and the years were named after them in the order in which they visited. People born in those years are believed to share characteristics with that animal. 2022 is the Year of the Tiger, tigers are said to be strong, brave, competitive & confident! Socialization is important for everyone, but it’s especially important as we age. Interacting with others helps keep us mentally, physically and emotionally fit. Seniors with an active social life are reported to have less stress, exercise more and remain mentally sharp with fewer cases of memory loss. Socially active seniors claim to have a higher quality of life and studies even show they live longer! Yet making friends is more difficult as we age, it becomes harder to meet new people. At Riverview Park, you’ll never feel lonely. There are lots of interesting and fun residents to befriend and the staff always have smiles on their faces. The beloved tradition we have each year of dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating on October 31st is rooted in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. People would dress in costumes and light bonfires to ward off spirits. The Celts believed that the night before the new year (which was celebrated on Nov 1) the veil between land of the living and the realm of the dead was at it’s thinnest. On this night, October 31st, it is believed that the spirits usually trapped on the other side can return to the earth once again. It was thought the presence of the spirits made predictions of the future easier to tell. To celebrate this huge and sacred bonfires were built that people gathered around dressed in costume (often animal in nature) and attempted to tell each others' fortunes. At the end of the celebrations, the people would re-light the fires in their hearths from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the approaching winter. Now that you know a little more about the history of Hallowe’en, we would like to wish you all a safe and happy Samhain. Blessed Be! #Halloween #historyofhalloween #happyhalloween #Samhain #blessedbe #staysafe #riverviewpark #riverviewparkresidenceButton

As much as we hate to admit it, Summer has come to a close. :( Now that the cold weather appears to be imminent there are a few tips we would like to share to help keep you warm and safe! -Layers, lots of them! Multiple thin, light layers will actually keep you warmer then a single bulky layer. -Choose mittens over gloves. Don’t forget to wear a hat and scarf for your outdoor adventures. -Change out of damp or wet clothes as quickly as possible. -Keep indoor temperatures set to 65° or warmer. -Try getting an ice pick-like attachment for your cane, the extra traction is wonderful. -Speaking of extra traction, consider getting Ice & Snow Grips for your boots!!! Despite taking many precautions, accidents can still happen. If they do, we can help. We have Respite programs you can take advantage of anytime you need to recover from an accident or surgery. You can even just come stay with us for a short period to get away from the solitary days that inevitably happen in winter. Don’t be shy! #winter #staywarm #wintersafety #wintersafetyforseniors #respite #winterstaycation #riverviewpark #riverviewparkresidenceButton

Do you know what Osteoporosis is? It is a disease that directly affects your bones. It can cause your them to become so brittle that any action can cause them to fracture. In fact the word ‘osteoporosis’ means ‘porous bone’! While World Osteoporosis Day began in the United Kingdom, it is a worldwide disease and affects approximately 200 million people and while it affects both men and women, women are four times more likely to develop this disease. Some of the symptoms are, loss of height, change in posture, shortness of breath, bone fractures and pain in the lower back. There are MANY factors that can affect your risk of developing the disease and the following medical conditions can lead to higher risks and you might want to discuss with your health care professional if you should begin an early screening process: Overactive thyroid, parathyroid, or adrenal glands. History of bariatric (weight loss) surgery or organ transplant. Hormone treatment for breast or prostate cancer or a history of missed periods. Celiac disease, or inflammatory bowel disease. Blood diseases such as multiple myeloma. Other lifestyle factors that lead to a higher risk are your eating habits, smoking, drinking alcohol (two or more drinks a day), a lifestyle that is largely inactive. Some ways to prevent the onset of Osteoporosis are by leading an active lifestyle. Eating healthy and ensuring you get enough calcium and vitamin D. Getting a yearly bone density scan will also help you monitor your bones health! #health #medical #worldosteoporosisday #osteoporosis #riverviewpark #riverviewparkresidenceButton
